It’s a familiar heartbreak: your favorite sweater comes out of the wash looking smaller, longer, or just plain misshapen. Before you give up on it, know this—there’s often hope. With the right techniques and a bit of patience, you can bring your sweater back to life and even prevent future mishaps. Here’s how to restore the fit and keep your knits looking their best.

Step One: Figure Out What Happened

When a sweater loses its shape, it’s usually due to one of three issues:

  1. Shrinkage – caused by hot water or a spin in the dryer.
  2. Stretching – from hanging it to dry or leaving it wet too long.
  3. Twisting – when seams and edges warp, making the sweater look uneven.

Identifying the cause helps you choose the right fix. Check the care label and feel the fabric—does it seem stiff, loose, or uneven? That’s your clue.

If the Sweater Has Shrunk

Shrinkage happens when fibers tighten up from heat or agitation, especially in wool, cotton, or cashmere. Luckily, you can often relax them again.

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of hair conditioner or baby shampoo. This helps soften the fibers.
  2. Soak the sweater for 15–30 minutes, gently pressing the water through the fabric.
  3. Lift it out and blot it dry with a towel—damp, not dripping.
  4. Lay it flat on a dry towel, and gently stretch it back into shape. Work slowly, pulling a little at a time in both length and width.
  5. Let it air dry flat, ideally on a mesh drying rack or towel, so it doesn’t sag or distort.

If it’s still too small, repeat the process. It may take a couple of tries to fully relax the fibers.

If the Sweater Has Stretched Out

A stretched sweater usually means it was hung to dry while heavy with water. Gravity does the rest, leaving you with a droopy fit.

  • Rewash it on a gentle, cold cycle and spin lightly.
  • Lay it flat to dry, reshaping it as it dries.
  • If it’s still too long, use a steamer or iron on the steam setting (without pressing down) to help the fibers contract slightly.
  • For wool sweaters, you can also seal it in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer overnight—the cold can help the fibers tighten up.

If the Sweater Is Twisted or Misshapen

When seams twist or edges curl, it’s often because the sweater wasn’t reshaped properly after washing. You can fix this with a little moisture and patience.

  • Lightly mist the sweater with water using a spray bottle.
  • Lay it flat, and gently tug the seams and edges back into place.
  • Pin or weigh down the corners to hold the shape while it dries.
  • For knits, you can block the sweater—stretch it to its original shape on a flat surface and secure it with rustproof pins until dry.

Prevent It Next Time

The best fix is prevention. A few simple habits can save your sweaters from future disasters:

  • Always read and follow the care label.
  • Use a mesh laundry bag for delicate fibers like wool or cashmere.
  • Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle.
  • Skip the dryer—heat is a sweater’s worst enemy.
  • Lay sweaters flat to dry, never hang them.
  • Fold them for storage instead of hanging, which can stretch the shoulders.

When All Else Fails

If your sweater can’t be fully restored, don’t toss it just yet. A shrunken wool sweater can become cozy mittens, a pillow cover, or a felted pouch. A stretched cotton one can serve as comfy loungewear or a layering piece for yard work. Giving it a second life keeps it useful—and out of the landfill.

A Sweater Worth Saving

Restoring a sweater isn’t just about saving clothes—it’s about caring for what you already own. Every time you extend the life of a garment, you reduce waste and make your wardrobe more sustainable. And maybe that’s what makes your old favorite even more special: it’s been through a little wear and tear, but it’s still yours—and still going strong.
